As Miami embarks on its search for a provost, the news that David Rosowsky, one of the candidates, received a vote of no confidence from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) faculty at the University of Vermont in April is troublesome.
Nearly 16 years ago, Miami University workers went on strike. It was the first labor strike in Miami history, and it was not without reason. When one looks back on news articles published about the strike, they can find scathing criticisms of the hardships faced by the staff that keep our university running.
Since April 5, signs promoting the white supremacist hate group Patriot Front have been spotted on Miami's campus. Although the posting of these signs is not a violent attack, it adds a new level of reality to the Miami community's racist reputation. It suggests there is organization and encouragement behind it.
