Butler County turns out for Issue 1 vote: Oxford boasts precincts with highest — and lowest — turnout

Voters showed up to polling locations like Talawanda High School Tuesday to vote on Issue 1, an Ohio ballot measure which would make it more difficult to amend the state constitution.

As the polls closed across Butler County for the Aug. 8 special election tonight, initial numbers from electionlink.net suggested a strong turnout to vote on Issue 1.

Issue 1 is a ballot issue that would make it more difficult to amend the Ohio State Constitution, requiring a 60% majority on ballot measures and signatures from all 88 counties before an issue could even appear on the ballot. The issue is seen as a proxy for abortion because it would have implications for a November ballot measure to protect abortion in the state constitution

More than 35% of eligible voters in Butler County made the effort to vote this time around, compared to less than 10% in a primary last August. A quarter of voters voted by absentee ballot or mail, with the rest voting in person on election day.

Oxford and Oxford Township had the four precincts with the lowest voter turnout across the county, as well as the three with the highest voter turnouts. In two precincts, more than 60% of voters made it to the polls, more than the statewide turnout for last year’s midterm elections.

Each of the four precincts with the lowest turnout were centered on Miami University and saw less than 5% of eligible voters participate. Miami’s semester doesn’t start until Aug. 28. In last August’s primary, the four precincts centered on Miami had a combined seven voters make it to their polling station or vote by mail.
