The Miami Student wins nine first-place awards for collegiate journalistic work

Reporters from The Miami Student took home nine first-place and five finalist awards for journalism work in the Mark of Excellence (MOE) regional competition. In total, 15 Student reporters won recognition.

Presented by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the MOE awards aim to “[honor] the best in student journalism,” by recognizing print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.

Patricia Gallagher Newberry, area coordinator of Miami’s journalism program and immediate past president of SPJ, said she hopes the award helps to put Miami journalism students on the map.

“I think it adds to our profile in the state of Ohio and beyond as a journalism program that has students that are doing notable work,” Gallagher Newberry said. “I think the awards serve to tell not only the Miami and Oxford community, but the whole country that Miami journalism has got it going on.”

First place winners will go on to compete for national recognition in the fall.
