At 8:45 a.m. on a brisk February morning, students and faculty lined the hallway of the Marcum Hotel and Conference Center. Organized by the Faculty Alliance of Miami, the Ohio Student Association (OSA) and the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), we assembled at the Board of Trustees meeting to oppose a motion that would take out $281 million in debt to develop a new stadium on top of Cook Field.
Many people are surprised to hear that, as a dysgraphic person, I chose to major in creative writing and am the assistant opinion editor for The Student. But below the occasionally obtuse layers of spelling and grammar, is a process of writing that is intoxicating. Starting in the fall of 2023, Miami University removed or consolidated 19 majors due to low enrollment. Now in 2025, more majors may soon be removed due to changes in state law and the relocation of resources toward majors with high levels of enrollment.

Setting aside the Orwellian imagery of service workers preparing burrito bowls behind the food-locker bars of their glass prison, ordering from Bell Tower is just downright inconvenient. Call me old-fashioned, but can’t there at least be an option to talk to a person instead of tapping away at a screen every time I want to eat?
“I am Miami,” voices echo around the stadium at the convocation, as first-year students recite the Code of Love and Honor, a pledge designed to instill the values of the university into its pupils.
