A Talawanda High School senior with plans to attend Miami University’s School of Engineering in the fall was killed on April 22 after a house fire, according to a press release from the Oxford Fire Department (OFD).
According to the coroner’s office, 18-year-old Ryan Starrett died of smoke inhalation.
Crews on scene, including surrounding fire departments from Milford, Ross and Reily Townships, as well as the Oxford Township Police and the Oxford Police Department, assisted in the response, but weren’t able to enter the home due to “numerous obstructions and the heavy volume of fire that was fed by the fire damaged natural gas meter.”
The Starrett family created a GoFundMe to raise funds to help with funeral costs, temporary housing and rebuilding, according to the page.
The home is a total loss, and the family lost all of their possessions, while also struggling to deal with the loss of their son, according to the GoFundMe.
So far, they have raised $48,000 of their $50,000 goal.
