Faculty to discuss religious beliefs in week-long event

They both stand in front of an amassed congregation, trying their best to impart what they believe to be vital information into the minds of people whose levels of interest in what they're saying vary greatly. There seems to be more than a few similarities between preachers and professors.

CULTURE

sex in college: 'A big fucking deal'

Even at the height of the #MeToo movement this past winter, it was difficult to talk about ambiguously consensual sex -- the kind that's technically consensual, but doesn't totally feel that way.

FOOD

The Bee's Knees: The Prohibition-era classic cocktail

When the phrase "the bee's knees" was coined -- more than a century before this cocktail's invention -- it referred to something small or insignificant. By the 1920s, however, the phase joined the company of several other zoological expressions meaning "the best" (see also: the cat's pajamas, the eel's ankle, the capybara's spats).

'We are Proud to Present' meant to make you feel uncomfortable

The title "We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Suedwesafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915," lets its audience know right off the bat that this is not going to be an easy show to take in.

Miami students proudly display diversity

Miami students are accustomed to the tables set up by various campus organizations on the second floor of Armstrong. Most of them are advertising or fundraising, and many students quickly walk by avoiding eye contact, not wanting to be interrupted on their way to and from class.

More than just clowning around

It's 10 a.m. on a Saturday and I am bear crawling in a circle around an acting studio with my favorite professor, 12 other students and a certified clown.

ENTERTAINMENT

Could 'Cruel Intentions' be made in 2018? Probably not.

The 1990s cult classic "Cruel Intentions" started streaming on Netflix last Friday, allowing viewers like me to witness the film for the first time. I was completely shocked by its stepsiblings-running-a-sex-bet-to-get-in-each-other's-pants narrative, and wondered whether the film could have been made this year.

ENTERTAINMENT

'Red Sparrow' is a revolting, pointless show of human cruelty

"Red Sparrow," the latest Jennifer Lawrence vehicle, is an espionage thriller with a bland plot and very little in the way of thrills. It's a film with a lot of production value that merely puts a glossy sheen over a story so trashy it ranks with gorefests like "Hostel" and other smut. Mindless and limitlessly cynical, its only saving grace is that eventually, it ends -- though it makes us wait an excruciating 140 minutes for the sweet release of credits.

TRAVEL

Attending church abroad: More museum than mass

The gray and blue stone shoots out over the tops of the uniform orange shingles of Bruges' buildings. Equally beautiful, yet somehow out of place, St. Salvator's Cathedral towers over the carefully crafted, old-timey Bruges like a grandfather sitting next to a 20-year-old with full makeup, striving to look old enough to get into a bar. The authenticity sometimes missing in the tourist packed streets oozes off of the cathedral.
