Hook, Yarn and Needles is Miami University’s club dedicated to all fiber crafts. This includes crocheting, knitting, embroidery and more.
Junior president Kiera Lewis and senior co-president Althaea Adams-Van Schaik currently run the club.
They meet every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. in the Art Building in room 136. There’s no need to stay the whole time, as the meetings are come-and-go.
Hook, Yarn and Needles provides supplies and is open to all skill levels.
“A lot of people come to the club knowing absolutely nothing about fiber arts; we love teaching people,” Lewis said. Anyone can come to the club wanting to learn something entirely new, and someone there will know how to do it and will be more than willing to show them.
Most people think of fiber arts as strictly crocheting and knitting. However, “It includes anything that has to do with fiber. There’s needle felting, spinning yarn, dyeing yarn, embroidery or sewing. We try to have all the materials so people can try whatever they want,” Adams-Van Schaik said.
Treasurer Annie Lyons said the club was inactive during COVID-19 before being picked back up in 2021. The club used to do projects for specific reasons such as making hats for newborns.
“About once a year we plan to make mats out of plastic bag yarn for homeless folk to sleep on because it is more insulating,” said social media chair Lia Watt. While the club is dedicated to personal projects, there are still times dedicated to creating resources for the community.
As a way to show people a deeper side of fiber arts, the club has a yearly visit to Heritage Hills Farm. Each time, they have a demonstration of needle felting, yarn spinning or yarn dyeing. They even show shearing one of the various animals on their farm from which they collect fur to create their own yarn.
Hook, Yarn and Needles creates a safe space for anyone who wishes to join. Lewis said that when she comes to the club, she feels like all her worries are left at the door.
“Our goal for the club is just to make people feel welcome, and like there’s a safe space to create or just hang out and be around people they can trust and be comfortable with,” Lewis said.
