The second night of Conan Gray’s “The Wishbone Pajama Show” was an outstanding performance of emotional music, beautiful production, and glamorous costumes. On Sept. 13, Gray took the stage at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati. The atmosphere was electric — the crowd matched Gray’s stage presence through their adherence to the show’s theme.
The audience's outfits ranged from pajamas to sailor costumes, each person embodying the “Wishbone” album in their own way. Gray reflected the show’s emotional spectrum through his own costumes, ranging from flowing silk to pajamas, and, to end the show, a sparkling sailor suit.
The set, when paired with his outfits and vocals, all fit perfectly together, creating a dream-like atmosphere with sailboats and clouds. The atmosphere complemented the storytelling throughout the set that he portrayed through his performance and movements.
Gray started his set with the most upbeat song from his new album, “My World.” Throughout the night, Conan featured songs from all four of his albums, including fan-favorite songs like “Never Ending Song,” “People Watching,” “Maniac” and ended the night with “Caramel.”
Arguably, a fan-favorite part of the night is the choosing of the surprise song. Conan chooses one guest, and the two pull apart a wishbone; whoever gets the bigger half gets to choose the song. For the Cincinnati show, the two song choices were “Alley Rose” and “The Exit.” For the second night in a row, Conan broke off the larger end of the wishbone. However, Conan let the fan choose the song anyway, and “The Exit” was chosen.
Despite being a bigger artist with over 25 million monthly Spotify listeners, Conan maintains a more personal connection with the crowds during his shows by talking directly to the crowd about personal emotions.
During “Eleven Eleven,” the crowd was lit with flashlights and he thanked the crowd for bringing such a beautiful and emotional moment to his show. Another perfect moment of connection, that perfectly summarizes how the night felt, is when Conan reminds the crowd that they are loved by everyone in the crowd and by him.
