Leaves are beginning to turn to shades of orange and red, days are getting shorter and there is just a whisper of a chill in the air: it’s finally starting to feel like fall. Which, of course, means that we can finally exchange our shorts and bikinis for more weather-appropriate options.
Building an autumnal capsule wardrobe can be tricky, so I’m here to provide you with some tips for how you can look your best this fall.
Sweaters
With its cooler weather, autumn is all about feeling cozy, and your clothes are the easiest way to do that. Sweaters, same as every year before, are perfect for staying nice and cozy this fall. I believe that every closet should have three types of sweaters: a chunky knit, a cardigan and a fun patterned or colored jumper. With these three staples in your wardrobe, you can mix and match countless combinations for outfits all autumn long.
Denim
Nothing says fall like a trip to the pumpkin patch and a hayride, and the only thing to wear to these kinds of things is denim. That’s right, I’m talking pants, jackets, overalls — all of it. To make the most of your fall outfits, you need these denim pieces: a pair of wide-leg jeans, some sort of long sleeve (a jacket or button-down), a jean skirt (long or short) and a unique denim piece of your choice (overalls, a dress, etc.). Denim is the perfect neutral: it matches everything, so it’s an essential basic for everyone this autumn.
Quick tip: Don’t be shy about pairing two different denim articles — a monochrome jean moment is so chic! After all, the Canadian tuxedo is making a comeback.
Autumnal colors
Fall is renowned for its color scheme, and your wardrobe should be no different. Browns, reds, yellows and navy are the shades of the season. If you want to match the autumnal landscape, you can stick to more muted hues, but don’t be afraid of a pop of color: it can make a boring outfit 10 times better!
Aside from color, you can also use patterns to bring dimension to basic outfits. Patterns like polka dots and stripes are an easy way to make your ensemble eye-catching, especially in a season where darker colors are becoming more common.
Accessories
Alright, so we have the foundation laid for your autumn wardrobe, so now it’s time to discuss the most important part of any outfit: the accessories. Your priority should be on finding pieces with plenty of versatility. Simple jewelry (the metal doesn’t matter) that matches everything is a must, and a signature belt and bag are an absolute necessity. Classic pieces make any outfit look put together. Your clothes are the focus of an outfit, but the right accessories can elevate an already great look.

It can be intimidating to begin, but just remember, being able to match an article in your closet to everything else in it is the key to building a capsule wardrobe: the most amount of outfits with the least amount of clothes. With just a few select pieces, you can dress your absolute best for the whole season. So, when you’re thinking about what you should be wearing this fall, step back, consider the basics but don’t forget to make it your own.
