Miami University's Associated Student Government (ASG) commenced its meeting Tuesday with unanimous consent to pass the club sports funding plan that was introduced last week.
The Student Senate approved a total of $314,000 to be awarded to club sports teams. ASG preliminarily awarded $630,000 to club sports teams but had to issue a 50 percent cutback to stay within budget.
Subsequently, Vice President for Student Organizations Senior Michael Trivelli presented the funding for student organizations, which will be voted upon next week.
Trivelli estimated that the cutback for funding for organizations will only be about 30 percent this year.
In addition, he said ASG has been 13 percent more efficient at awarding funding this year than last year. Therefore, ASG will have to do less of a cutback than they have in previous years.
Finally, Trivelli said when student organizations apply for funding for an event they must fulfill three requirements if they are to receive the full amount that they requested.
"Organizations apply for the full amount of funding, and for each of three criteria they meet during their event we give them one third of their funding," Trivelli said. "The three criteria include the event being on campus-anywhere on Miami's campus or within a square mile-, the second is free admission, and the last one is that the event is educational."
Further in the meeting, ASG elected the senators for Senator Pro Tempore, Parliamentarian and Environmental Committee Chair.
The senator pro tempore is one of ASG's highest positions of authority and requires the holder to keep track of the attendance of the ASG members.
Senior Taylor Lewis beat his competitor junior Drew Doggett for the position.
Lewis said he will decrease the vagueness of the current ASG attendance policy, and maintain the importance of senator and cabinet member presence at each meeting and event.

Junior Shelby Copenhaver won the position of Parliamentarian against opponents senior Rose Kaplan and junior Molly Rzepka. Copenhaver emphasized her experience as an intern for a city manager in Loveland, Ohio, where she drafted revenue ordinances and utility bills, as a credential for the position.
She will use her experience in this area to achieve her goals as Parliamentarian this year.
"I learned a lot this summer with the revenue ordinances that I wrote, and how a code should read," she said. "The biggest goal I have is to make sure the [bylaws] are accurate and make sense so that everyone can read them and understand them."
Incumbent Environmental Committee Chair senior Brittany Murphy won the position for the third time. She ran against junior Ryan O'Toole. Murphy said she will retain the beauty of campus and do environmental outreach with senators, as well as build upon the new bus routes she implemented last year.
The meeting closed with unanimous approval of the senate attendance standing rules, which outlines the attendance requirement for student senators.
