Geology department hosts walking tour

In honor of Miami University's Bicentennial, the geology department will be hosting a field trip to Peffer Park at 10 a.m. Saturday. The trip will consist of a walk led by Miami geologists along Collins Run Creek and a lunch and open house of the geology department in Shideler Hall until 2:30 p.m.

Research funds available for Miami staff, faculty

Full-time faculty and staff have until Nov. 2 to apply for the Havighurst Center Fund. The Havighurst Center provides funding for those wishing to expand awareness of issues in Russia, Eastern Europe or Eurasia.

The award helps projects during spring and summer 2010 with projects aimed at getting Miami University community members involved receiving preference.

Applications are available at http://www.units.muohio.edu/havighurstcenter/opportunities/funding.html. Questions can be directed to Karen Dawisha, director of the Havighurst Center. One application and nine copies are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 2 in 116 Harrison Hall.

MU alumna to receive teaching award

Sharon Hall, who received her master's degree in teaching in 2004 from Miami University, will receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching at the White House.

Hall is one of 86 teachers who will receive this award this fall. Hall is currently a fourth grade teacher at South Lebanon Elementary School in Maineville, Ohio.

A panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators judged award recipients following a first-round selection process at the state level.

Hall has also taught professional development courses online in LessonLab, a division of Pearson Education in association with Miami University.
