The $281 million question: Who’s paying for the arena project?

The new arena project on Cook Field has raised questions around the Miami University community since it was first announced in February 2025. While ROTC students worried about their facilities being moved, intramural sports teams debated a replacement location choice, students raised concerns over tuition impacts and faculty rattled about program cuts, the underlying question remained unclear: who will pay for the new arena?







‘ICE OUT’: Demonstration against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes place at Miami

On Friday, protestors against President Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdown climbed through a foot of snow while holding resistance signs in their gloved hands to reach the Miami University seal, located in Academic Quad. These demonstrators demanded for ICE to leave Ohio and had the goal of standing in solidarity with protestors in Minneapolis following the recent fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.



Survey findings indicate strong opposition to arena district construction on Cook Field

The initial findings of a student-led community survey reveal that a large majority of respondents oppose the construction of an arena district on Cook Field, a current recreational green space. The results, based on over 3,347 responses, challenge the Board of Trustees’ historic decision from Feb. 2025.





University Senate begins renovations by approving new Enabling Act in the wake of Ohio Senate Bill 1

Following a public hearing on Nov. 3 and a semester of sessions discussing how to adapt to Senate Bill 1 (S.B. 1), the Miami University Senate officially approved a new Enabling Act created by the ad hoc committee. The Enabling Act revisions will go before the Board of Trustees at their next meeting in December. 



Associated Student Government rescinds resolution to dissolve University Senate, emphasizes growth and shared governance

Last week, the University Senate executive committee was made aware of a proposal to disband the University Senate. This resolution was authored by Nicholas Barry as a member of Associated Student Government (ASG). Barry recently became a member of senate, the governing body he proposed to dissolve.



University Senate acknowledges higher education concerns with Trump College Compact

On Monday, Provost Chris Makaroff spoke briefly to the University Senate about The Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education. This is a Trump administration proposal to United States universities which would confer preferential access to federal funds in exchange for agreeing to certain demands. 



Student-led survey gathering opinions on the approved arena district

After hearing about Miami University’s decision to build a new arena district on Cook Field, many students felt that their opinions had not been taken into account by the Board of Trustees. Bri Fitzgerald, a senior organizational leadership major, along with other students and community members, came together to figure out what they could do to make their voices heard.
