Miami University’s Associated Student Government (ASG) passed a resolution involving student health insurance and discussed campus safety concerns at its meeting on Oct. 13.
Parliamentarian Nick McClure presented his “Resolution to Encourage Miami University to Update Student Health Insurance,” which would eliminate the need for students to resubmit proof of insurance to waive their student health insurance at the beginning of each school year.
McClure said the policy would require students to submit their insurance for their first year at Miami, but it wouldn’t require students to submit it again every year if their insurance stays the same. He also said that this legislation follows the necessary state and federal laws and does not oppose any university policy or rule.
Several senators said they also had issues with the process in the past.
“I have the same insurance I had last year, and this year it got rejected because United Healthcare somehow did not qualify for insurance,” Senator Stepan Teluk said. “I got student insurance charged to my account and it’s also through United Healthcare Insurance.”
The senators voted unanimously to pass the resolution.
ASG also addressed student concerns. A student asked if the Miami University Police Department or the Oxford Police Department could patrol some of the bus stops due to safety concerns.
The concern was committed to the Safety and Transportation Committee.
A student said they were concerned about a missing crosswalk segment on the northwest corner of North Patterson Avenue and West Withrow Street. The student said they felt unsafe crossing the road sometimes without a proper crosswalk being there.
The concern was committed to the Safety and Transportation Committee.
Senator Liam McKernan said he was concerned about paper towel dispensers being empty in the Recreation Center men’s bathroom.
Secretary of Sustainability Lynn Setter said the women’s bathroom had the same issue.
