Celebrating 200 Years

Meet the Columnist: Taylor Powers

I grew up in a tiny, rural Ohio town. Think Oxford, but way less cute.

My town doesn’t get much coverage, except around election season or if something major happens, like our school’s levy fails or there's proposed construction. Consequently, I was first introduced to journalism through my high school’s newspaper. Ironic, right?

I joined The Miami Student in my first year, but very quickly experienced burnout. I joined the Opinion section as a creative outlet, and here I am today as the editor.

I write about a variety of topics, but the two I cover most are the internet and children’s safety.

I enjoy analyzing how technology influences our culture. It's had a profound impact on how we live day-to-day — for better or for worse — and I like picking apart the goods and bads.

I also like bringing light to the issues concerning children’s well-being that are constantly swept under the rug. Children are our future, and we should see to it that they are cared for.

In addition to writing, I co-host a podcast called “Bizarre Butler County,” and I’m a co-editor of The Miami Student Magazine. Outside of the newsroom, I’m vice president of Miami Dance Corps.

As I said, opinion writing is my creative outlet. So know when you’re reading a piece of mine, know that you’re seeing my raw, unfiltered beliefs.

If you’re reading my words, know that I’m speaking directly to you from the heart.
