In complete honesty, I had no intention of joining The Miami Student (TMS) my first year.

While I was familiar with journalistic writing from my high school days, I thought AP style and student interviews were a thing of my past; a passion left behind to gather dust with my soccer cleats and watercolors.

Luckily, my roommate (and one of my best friends) dragged me to a TMS informational meeting, where I promptly signed up to write for every section.

The rest is history.

Now, I am one of the Campus and Community editors, and I also contribute to Opinion, Culture and Sports.

But since this is an Opinion piece, I’ll keep it focused there.

I enjoy writing about pretty much anything, from my thoughts on melons in the dining halls to my experience being accidentally canceled on the internet.

For me, opinion writing is less about uniform topics and more about a writing style that sounds like me. I want my columns to sound natural, so that readers are able to pick up a story and hear my tone like I’m reading to them out loud.

It’s a goal I think about in every piece I write, and one I hope to develop over the semesters I have left at this paper. In the meantime, I’ll just be taking it day by day.

See you soon.
