Senior guard Amber Scalia dribbles against Coastal Carolina in Monday's season-opener win for the RedHawks

The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team (1-0) began its 2025-26 season with a road victory over the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers (0-1) on Nov. 3 thanks to a dominant second quarter.

At one point, Miami trailed 21-17 early in the first half. With just under six minutes left in the second quarter, the RedHawks more than doubled their score while allowing the Chanticleers just one point to take a 35-22 lead going into the second half.

Sophomore guard Tamar Singer led both teams with 16 points, her second-most in a game at Miami, while also catching three steals. Junior transfer guard Amber Scalia made her presence known as a RedHawk with 15 points as well as two steals.

Junior guard Núria Jurjo joined Singer and Scalia in the double-digits with 11 points, nine of which coming from 3-pointers, where she shot 3-5 (60%). Junior forward Amber Tretter continued her success off the glass from last season with 11 rebounds and scored eight points.

The RedHawks allowed one Chanticleer to score in the double digits. Junior forward Tessa Grady led her team with 13 points, followed by graduate student guard Kristin Williams and freshman guard Olivia Klanac with nine points each.

Grady gave Coastal Carolina an early lead after sinking a 3-pointer less than a minute into the game. The Chanticleers kept Miami from the rim for almost two minutes until Tretter got the RedHawks on the scoreboard with a jumper.

Both teams battled back and forth in the first quarter, with Coastal Carolina holding a four-point lead after the first 10 minutes of play. It added three points early in the second quarter, but Miami’s 21-4 run in those 10 minutes ultimately decided the game.

The RedHawks kept their advantage in the second half despite being outscored 31-28. Coastal Carolina came close, narrowing the gap to 50-44 and later to 53-49 in the fourth quarter, but was unable to retake the lead.

Miami joined four other Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams to win their matchups against their Sun Belt Conference opponents. The reigning MAC champions Ball State University Cardinals won their game against the Arkansas State University Red Wolves 68-62. The preseason No. 1 Kent State University Golden Flashes dropped their challenge 80-48 against the James Madison University Dukes.

The RedHawks will have their home-opener on Nov. 7 against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets.
