How to celebrate Black History Month at Miami this year

<p>In 1964, the Western College for Women (now part of Miami University) in Oxford hosted hundreds of student volunteers to train them on how to register voters in the South as part of the Civil Rights Movement. The event was called Freedom Summer.</p>

In honor of Black History Month, Miami University and the City of Oxford are offering programming throughout February for students to celebrate and learn about Black heritage.

The Miami Student has compiled a list of events for students to attend throughout the month. Additional events throughout Butler County can be found in a list by the Hamilton Journal-News.

Enjoy Oxford offers a self-guided one-hour tour through the historic locations of the city’s Black community that can be completed anytime.

Feb. 8

Black Excellence Scholars Series — Virtual Event, 12-1 p.m.

Sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) and the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI), this series features a lecture by professor Rodney Coates.

Feb. 9

Black Love Panel — Virtual Event, 12-1 p.m.

Co-sponsored by a wide range of departments at Miami, this event will bring together a panel to discuss relationships in the Black community.

Lived Experiences at Miami: Website Unveiling — King Library 320, 5 p.m.

A team of students and faculty will share a new website compiling the stories of people of color at Miami between 1970 and the early 2000s.

Anti-Racism Workshop — Shriver Bystrom, 10-11:30 a.m.

This event, hosted by OIDI, aims to teach attendees about racial equity and preventing racism by identifying and countering racist behaviors in ourselves and others.

Feb. 15

Diversity Statement Workshop — Shriver Bystrom, 1-2 p.m.

This workshop will teach students about best practices in creating or responding to diversity statements in applications.

Feb. 16

Black Excellence Scholars Series — Virtual Event, 12-1 p.m.

Kristian Contreras, a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion consultant, will speak about the barriers facing Black women working in education and how to overcome them in this lecture co-hosted by OIDI and CDEI.

Black History Month Banquet — Armstrong Student Center, Donald W. Fritz Pavilion C, 7 p.m.

This event, put on by the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (CSDI) and the Black Leadership Coalition, is billed as a night to celebrate Black History. The deadline to RSVP and get a free ticket is Feb. 9.

Feb. 20

Black Excellence Scholars Series — Virtual Event, 12-1 p.m.

OIDI and CDEI co-host this lecture featuring Helane Androne, professor of English, as she discusses archetypes in Black womanist science fiction and fantasy.

Feb. 21

Lived Experiences at Miami: Documentary Premiere — Shideler Hall Auditorium, 6-8 p.m.

This documentary, created by Miami students and faculty, tells the stories of people of color at Miami from 1970 to the early 2000s.

Feb. 22

Celebrating Black History Month: Lived Experiences Project — Virtual Event, 12 p.m.

Hosted by the Alumni Association, this event highlights a storytelling project funded by the Boldly Creative fund called “Lived Experiences: Race at Miami University.” The project features a digital archive chronicling the stories of diverse people at Miami.

Feb. 23

Black Excellence Scholars Series — Virtual Event, 12-1 p.m.

During this lecture, hosted by OIDI and CDEI, Morgan Moore, assistant director of student wellness, will discuss how the physical assault and the consequences of racism and sexism uniquely impact Black women and their lived experiences.

This lecture hosted by OIDI and CDEI will feature assistant director of student organization engagement Lauren Brassfield.
