Miami defeated Central Michigan 4-3 to remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.

Miami field hockey took care of business when it mattered this weekend.

It wasn’t pretty, but Friday the RedHawks beat Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan 3-2 in overtime.

At halftime, Central Michigan led 1-0 even though Miami held the advantage in shots 10-1.

The RedHawks finally got on the board at the end of the third quarter, when sophomore forward Claudia Negrete Garcia sent home a pass from junior midfielder Luli Rosso.

At the start of the fourth quarter, with the score tied 1-1, Miami led in shots 22-1 and had taken 11 penalty corners compared to zero for the Chippewas. With about ten minutes left in the game, senior midfielder Lexie Nugent winded through the Chippewa defense on her way to a tie breaking goal.

Then, with just 15 seconds left, Central Michigan tied it.

After nine minutes of back and forth overtime, Rosso scored the walk-off goal for Miami. The RedHawks finished the game with a ridiculous 39 shots and 18 penalty corners.

Sunday, the RedHawks didn’t fare as well, losing to Michigan State 4-3. Miami finished the game with the advantage in shots and penalty corners, but couldn’t stave off an early Spartan onslaught, as MSU scored three goals in the first half.

Garcia finished with two goals and an assist for the ’Hawks, and she also fired off nine shots. First-year Midfielder Reese Wearren scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the game.

Miami takes the field again this Friday, October 15, at Kent State University.
