Jack Owens (pictured) is out as head coach of the Miami University basketball team after leading the RedHawks to a 70-82 record over five seasons.

RedHawks men’s basketball head coach Jack Owens’ contract has been extended through the 2023-2024 season as announced by the program Thursday.

A copy of Owens’ extension obtained by The Miami Student via Extra Points shows the contract was signed on May 4, 2021 and expires on May 31, 2024.

The Student reached out to Miami’s athletic department for comment, but they did not immediately respond.

Owens’ base salary is $368, 924 per year, his same annual salary for the 2019 fiscal year. His base salary was reduced to $306, 490.71 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Miami University’s salary roster.

If Miami wins at least 20 regular season games, Owens will earn a bonus of 4.167% of his base salary. He will earn the same bonus if he wins the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year.

If the RedHawks win the regular season Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship, he will receive a bonus of 8.333% of his base salary. Owens will earn a bonus of the same figure (8.333%) for an NCAA Tournament appearance (likely obtained through a MAC tournament championship) and any subsequent NCAA Tournament win.

Owens has led the Redhawks to a 56-65 record since taking the helm.

At the start of his tenure Owens, hired in 2017, orchestrated Miami’s first postseason appearance in a first-round finish at the College Basketball International (CBI) tournament in 2018. He has since led the RedHawks to three MAC tournaments and their first winning regular season record since 2011.

Known as a skilled recruiting coach, Owens brought on six new players at the start of his Miami career, and has coached a player to the All-MAC Freshman Team for three consecutive years.

This year he returns all five starters from the 2020-2021 season in which the RedHawks finished 12-11. Owens expressed high hopes for the 2021-2022 season in a men’s basketball announcement on Twitter.

“We are excited for this upcoming season as we pursue a MAC championship,” Owens said in a tweet from Miami’s athletic department.
