Staff Assault victim's friends call Oxford Life Squad Around 2:45 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to University Housing Apartments on North Poplar Street in response to a felonious assault, according to the Oxford Police Department (OPD). The female victim, a Miami University student, was Uptown Friday night when she saw someone she knew around 11 p.m. She suspected that the individual was speaking maliciously about her, but remained Uptown and continued socializing until she was later dropped off at her residence on Poplar Street, according to OPD. Around 2 a.m. at the victim's apartment, a meeting took place between the victim and the subject she had observed Uptown. An argument ensued regarding their relationship. A physical altercation soon developed and the victim's sustained injuries warranted Life Squad presence, according to OPD. The victim initially called her friends to report the incident. They, in turn, contacted Oxford Life Squad for her. It was the Life Squad who alerted OPD dispatch and requested officers, according to OPD. After being transported to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, the victim told the officer she did not wish to press charges, according to OPD. The case is still under open investigation. Drive-thru employee spots open container Around 2:19 a.m. Monday, an officer in McDonald's drive-thru, 601 S. Locust St., responded to an open container of alcohol inside a vehicle, according to the Oxford Police Department (OPD). The officer's serendipitous position directly behind said vehicle in the drive-thru greatly aided response time. The employee working the first window informed the officer that he or she had seen an open can of Natural Light in the passenger side of a car that had just rolled through, according to OPD. Given a positive description of the vehicle, the officer approached the passenger side of the next car. First-year Austin Schwallie, 19, was found within, bearing the gingerly nested can tucked between his legs, according to OPD. The driver was advised to pull through and park; the officer followed. The driver was then given a field sobriety test and found not to be under the influence, according to OPD. The pair consented to a vehicle search, which bore illegal fruit. The officer found two Illinois drivers licenses both belonging to Schwallie and both fictitious, according to OPD. Schwallie was charged with sales to and use by underage persons, certain acts prohibited and open container. He was released, according to OPD. No word on whether either party finally received their McMeals.
