Applications open for $100,000 grant

Nearly $100,000 will be distributed this year through M.I.A.M.I. WOMEN (Miami Initiative for Advancing, Mentoring and Investing in Women) for projects that support the advancement of women.

Miami Tribe of Oklahoma's 2018 Winter Gathering

Every year, a bus full of Miami students, faculty and staff make the over 600-mile trek from Miami University to Miami, Oklahoma. There, the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma welcomes the group to its annual Winter Gathering. Throughout the weekend, members of the tribe tell their aalhsoohkaana, or winter stories, and teach visitors about Myaamia traditions, culture, history and language. The gathering culminates in a stomp dance where Miami Tribe members and their visitors, as well as guests from neighboring and nearby tribes, participate in a traditional social dance.

Sprinkler head defect causes water damage in Armstrong

Over 1,000 gallons of water burst through one of the sprinkler heads in the Joslin Senate Chamber in Miami's Armstrong Student Center (ASC) over roughly 30 minutes on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The sudden burst of water pressure set off the fire alarm, forcing everyone in Armstrong to evacuate until the Oxford Fire Department (OFD) arrived to shut off the water.

The town-gown event "Continuing the Dream in 2018" featured professor and coordinator of Black World Studies, Rodney Coates, who was recently charged by President Greg Crawford to head up a task force designed to educate the Miami community on how to combat racism and bigotry.

Lil B and Miami discuss admissions on Twitter

Brandon McCartney -- also known as Lil B or The BasedGod, a rapper and social media personality in Berkeley, CA -- is considering Miami as he starts his college search. The performer is seeking programs in science, biology and neuroscience.

Miami primatologist earns national distinction

Linda Marchant's office is located near the back of a small warren of rooms in a corner of Upham Hall. A printout of a meme is taped to the primatologist and professor of anthropology's door, expressing frustration with people who call apes "monkeys." Inside, books and papers fill the shelves along one wall and cover most flat surfaces, reflecting the knowledge and curiosity of the woman who sits in the middle of it all.

College Dems and Republicans debate Ohio race for governor, tax bill

Dozens of Miami University's most zealous political activists filed into the auditorium. The air was filled with an unmistakable tension. A student wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat walked past one wearing a "Make America Gay Again" hat, matched with a pair of rainbow socks.

Finals week means two different things: the end of the semester is near, and the holidays are approaching. The first of these major holidays is Hanukkah, or Chanukah, which begins on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Market Uptown brings groceries to students

Fridge and Pantry, a new Uptown market, will open its doors in January. Both a deli and a grocery, the new business also boasts additional amenities including a smoothie and growler bar.

After an hour-long discussion on appointments -- done in private executive session -- City Council re-elected incumbent Kate Rousmaniere as mayor and elected council member Steve Dana as vice mayor.
