Screen-agers, for better or worse?

On Miami University’s campus 50 years ago, you would have seen gaggles of students socializing on the greens, catching up with their friends in between classes and maybe engaging with a group tabling by the university seal, hosted by one of Miami’s many clubs. Nowadays, though, all there is to be seen are queues of students trudging along the sidewalks, heads bowed down towards the glow of their cellphones.

What is the college experience, really?

As an incoming first-year student, I was intimidated by what those around me expected to experience when I came to college: parties, drinking, smoking – all components of the stereotypical “college experience.” I’ve never really been interested in any of that, but I hadn’t heard very much about the other aspects of what life at a university could be like, so I was in the dark about anything else.
