Miami University’s Associated Student Government (ASG) passed a resolution involving allergy shots, discussed lighting issues at the intramural courts and elected members to serve on the search committee for the next student trustee at its meeting on Oct. 6.
Senator Jacob Van Riper presented his “Resolution to Encourage the University to Offer Allergy Shots on Campus,” which says the university should try to find a way to distribute shots through the Cleveland Clinic Health Sciences and Wellness building.
Allergy shots are not a service the university has provided in the past, however, only one place in Oxford, Family Allergy & Asthma, has offered them. The provider closed in 2024, leaving students and residents without a close place to receive treatment.
“As someone who does have to deal with this process of going and getting allergy shots, I have to drive all the way back to Columbus to get them, and I don’t want to do that if I don’t have to,” Senator Kayden Werkhoven said.
Other universities, including the Ohio State University do offer allergy therapy services, like allergy shots, through their student health services.
“The university would be wise to fill that need, especially as they want their students to be healthy,” Senator Christian Pearson said.
The senators voted to pass the resolution.
ASG also heard student concerns. Senator Alex Ruiz Lopez said he was concerned about the outside lighting at the newly constructed intramural fields by Millett Hall. He said that while playing intramural games, he witnessed the lights turn off at 10 p.m., even though many students were still using the space at that time.
Senator Zeplynn Whitmore said he agreed the lights were a safety issue because students were still occupying the space when the lights shut off.
“I don’t know about all of you, but I would be willing to go in front of the Board of Trustees, even, to get the whole light replaced, so that we can all play more pickleball,” Senator Liam McKernan said.
The concern was committed to the Safety and Transportation Committee.
ASG selected members for a search committee that will interview and select the next student trustee — a non-voting member on Miami’s Board of Trustees. Senators Gabe Slark, Penelope Seitzer and McKernan will serve on the committee.
