I discovered my passion for writing when I was seven years old, drafting my first-ever story: a My Little Pony fanfiction I handwrote in a dollar-store Fluttershy notebook. I didn’t know it at the time, but that notebook would catalyze a passion for writing that I’d pursue for the rest of my life.
There’s probably a hundred different reasons why I love to write. As a kid, penning semi-magical short stories helped me understand and manage the surreal awkwardness of growing up. I staved off the boredom of high school by typing up epic romances for hours until my vision blurred.
While I still love creative writing, creating opinion articles for The Miami Student is not just a hobby or coping mechanism: It allows me to share my thoughts confidently with the Miami community.
Most people would consider me a shy person. In class, I rarely raise my hand to answer questions. The Student gives me an avenue to express my opinions about issues that are important to me, without the painful heart palpitations I get speaking in a lecture hall.
Being quiet doesn’t mean I’m passive. I care so deeply about cultivating a fair, inclusive and equitable community wherever I go. A lot of my articles are deeply rooted in my experience being a woman, an immigrant and a student here at Miami.
By expressing my opinions on prominent cultural and political issues, I hope even just one reader may feel inspired to reconsider their perspective.
