Many people are surprised to hear that, as a dysgraphic person, I chose to major in creative writing and am the assistant opinion editor for The Student. But below the occasionally obtuse layers of spelling and grammar, is a process of writing that is intoxicating. By presenting your opinions on a page and publishing them, you challenge and refine your beliefs.

I am, to the frequent disgruntlement of my friends, a very opinionated person. It’s not uncommon that I’m stopped mid-rant and asked to “shut up.” In my writing, you will find the good opinions; ones that, I hope, are either novel, funny or relatable, and which are not full to the brim with fallacy and generalization.

Many of these opinions have to do with activism or higher education.

I'm on the steering committee of the Miami University Young Democratic Socialists of America and am very passionate about activism and how young people can push for a better world. It is often young people who are the vanguard for the important and transformative changes that help our society move forward.

Higher education is, of course, one of the main focuses of a college newspaper, but it is also an important and often overlooked aspect of our culture. The way we prepare young people for society is a microcosm that indicates how we think about our society as a whole. Both higher education and our society are being forced to undergo huge changes to adapt to our ever-changing world.

I hope that in reading my columns, you find them insightful or at least funny at my expense. If not, you can always send me an email and tell me, as my friends often do, to “shut up.”
