The annual Associated Student Government (ASG) president and vice president election takes place Monday, March 16 through Wednesday, March 18, and typically, The Miami Student endorses the candidates it feels are best fit for the job.
After listening to presentations from all five tickets and holding an open discussion with several of The Student’s staff, our Editorial Board has decided to give its endorsement to candidates Charlie Merrill and Susanne Morrissey.
The Student recognizes its important role in both covering the election and endorsing a candidate, and it does not make the decision lightly.
Merrill is a junior human capital management and leadership major and is running for president. He is president of the Society for Human Resource Management and a Farmer School of Business senator for ASG.
Morrissey is a sophomore marketing major and is running for vice president. She is the speaker of the senate for ASG and a resident assistant.
Merrill and Morrissey’s campaign pillars are mental health, life development and “Love and Honor.”
Under the mental health pillar, the pair hopes to create mental-health specific programming, like a no-phone social event. They also plan to increase student awareness of mental health resources already available on campus, like student counseling service.
The life development pillar focuses on skills and resources that prepare them for the real world, like taxes, cooking and how to change a tire. They plan to include existing resources with the career center and host workshops to teach students skills that aren’t included in classes.
The duo’s “Love and Honor” pillar is designed to rekindle Miami University’s campus culture with events like “Love and Honor Week,” where students can show their appreciation for faculty and staff. They also plan to introduce recognition programs that shine a light on student accomplishments.
The Student staff felt that Merrill and Morrissey’s platform was student oriented and achievable. They were great oral presenters and their strong social media presence shows their commitment to effective communication with students and university leaders.
Students can vote on the HUB.
