Chop Bento arrived in Oxford last semester. It started as a Chinese-inspired restaurant, but has since transitioned into Japanese-style food. After being closed for a month, they released a new menu and are planning on returning some of their Chinese-inspired dishes in the future, according to their Instagram.
Starting with their soup selection, they replaced their hot and sour soup with miso soup. Their hot and sour soup was a staple and honestly one of the best I have ever had. I tried their miso soup when I stopped in last week, and it was just your classic run-of-the-mill miso soup. Nothing show-stopping, but not bad. It rang up to $3.50.
For a shareable appetizer, I got the gyoza, which has been on the menu since last semester. They are pan-fried Japanese dumplings filled with pork, cabbage and green onion and served with a side of gyoza sauce. The sauce was salty and tangy and paired perfectly with the dumplings. It’s a great starter to split with friends, costing just $7.50.
For my main course, I got Japanese udon noodles topped with chicken katsu. The noodles were thick and chewy and submerged in a soy-based sauce with mixed vegetables. Their chicken katsu is also unbeatable. It’s perfectly crisped and pairs great with the noodles. The price came out to $14.95, but it is such a large serving that you can easily take leftovers home and get two meals out of it.
Chop Bento never fails to impress me. The staff are always friendly, the restaurant is always clean and the food is always delicious. They are going to continue to update their menu and play around with Chinese and Japanese dishes, and I cannot wait to try them all out.
