The Miami RedHawks men’s and women’s basketball teams added onto their historic success in a double header at Millett Hall on Saturday, Jan. 31 for One Miami Day.

Both teams broke attendance records, creating a loud, rowdy environment for both teams to add big Mid-American Conference (MAC) wins to their resume. One Miami Day was a great success, honoring past alumni while celebrating the continuing success of the basketball program as a whole.

Women's basketball vs. Ohio University (90-70)

The RedHawks improved to 10-0 in MAC play, their best conference start ever, and 18-4 overall with their win against the Bobcats. The game allotted 5,034 attendees, the highest in women’s basketball history, as the team broke another record, achieving 17 total 3-pointers.

The first quarter got off to a somewhat slow start, as Ohio took a 28-21 lead. In the second quarter, the RedHawks held the Bobcats to only 11 points as they scored 27 to bring the score to 48-39. Between quarters one and two, the energy shifted, bringing more push and head from the RedHawks on both sides of the ball.

“From the first quarter, I think we had a lot of turnovers, which led to them getting points offensively,” senior guard Amber Scalia said. “It's all about defense. Coach says it every day. So we came out, and we knew we needed to get stops, and stops lead to offense.”

The RedHawks came back out, scoring 25 and allowing 22 in the third quarter. They pulled ahead more in the fourth quarter though, holding Ohio to 9 points while scoring 17. The end of the game showed a 20 point RedHawk lead to win the game 90-70.

Scalia led the team, scoring 23 points, five of which were 3-pointers, the highest number on the team. Tamar Singer, the sophomore guard, spent the most time in the game, achieving the highest accuracy percentage between field goals and 3-point attempts.

The team as a whole came just under 50% accuracy for 3-point attempts, making 17 and marking a record in Miami women’s basketball history.

The RedHawks are at the top of the conference with nine games to play before the conference championship tournament starts on March 11. Their next game is this Saturday, Feb. 7, in Millett Hall at 1 p.m versus Sun Belt Conference opponent Georgia Southern University.

Men’s basketball vs. Northern Illinois University (85-61 win)

After President Gregory Crawford presented Ron Harper with his honorary degree, the Miami men’s basketball team took the court against Northern Illinois in front of 10,640 people, the largest attendance in Millett history.

The RedHawks took a slow start but held a 40-38 lead at halftime. Midway through the second half, Miami ran away with the game thanks to a 38-9 scoring run, extending its record to 22-0 and climbing to No. 23 in the AP poll.

Five players scored in the double figures. Redshirt sophomore wing Brant Byers tallied a team-high 21 points, followed by senior guard Peter Suder with 19. Senior forward Antwone Woolfolk earned his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore guard Luke Skaljac returned after missing the game against the University of Massachusetts Minutemen and scored 13 points.

The game was neck-and-neck early in the second half. Northern Illinois kept its deficit at 40-38, but jumped to a 52-47 lead with 15 minutes on the clock. However, the RedHawks’ defense stepped up and held the Huskies to nine points for the rest of the game. The offense scored 14.

“Our defense in the second half was so much better, we played with more hands, made them miss, didn't hope that they would miss,” head coach Travis Steele said. “We were just more active, that forced some turnovers, which is the way we want to play. So that picture that we had in the second half of our defense [is what I] need to see moving forward.”

Sophomore guard Gianni Cobb and freshman guard Taj Walters contributed 17 points each for Northern Illinois, but Miami held the rest of the Huskies to less than 10 points. With a 3-pointer from junior wing Eian Elmer, the RedHawks took the lead and held it for the remaining 13 minutes.

Miami stays with the University of Arizona Wildcats as the only undefeated teams remaining in NCAA men’s basketball. The RedHawks will face the University of Buffalo Bulls on the road on Feb. 3.
