Nothing pairs better than the holiday season, a warm cup of hot cocoa and “Gilmore Girls” on TV. Or maybe your family of muggles will finally give you some alone time to travel to Hogwarts to relive the magic of that fairytale. Regardless, we can all agree that the chilly weather pairs wonderfully with cinematic bliss.
Interestingly enough, only 48 out of 153 episodes of Gilmore Girls take place in the fall; so why do we itch to rewatch it the second the weather gets under 70 degrees?
“School and academics feel very fall to me,” junior speech pathology major Rylee Neihous said.
She is referring to the colors, the small town and everything in between, bringing the touch of a crisp fall walk vibe of a show.
This makes sense, considering the overall theme of the show, which is primarily focused on family and academia, smothered in auburn and yellow tones. But why do we associate a show that is primarily set in the springtime with fall? It’s the same argument we could make for Harry Potter being considered a Christmas movie series.
I'm sure almost everyone could agree that Christmas is the season most closely associated with magic, so in that case, some choosing to call a Harry Potter movie a Christmas film could make sense.
“Winter [series] yes, Christmas [series] no,” first-year journalism student Sydney Pinchouck said.
While Harry Potter does call for drinking Conjure Cocoa and watching Gryffindor beat Slytherin in the 450th annual Quidditch match, it is not necessarily Christmas, just winter-based.
What seasonal forces draw us to rewatch these cozy favorites at just the right time?
First-year early elementary education major Erika Ackerman said these movies and TV shows are essential for creating the perfect fall vibe.
“Something about [Harry Potter and Gilmore Girls] just seems so cozy,” Ackerman said. “It really just makes me think of Oxford and the small town culture of college and all the magic that happens here.”
Perhaps not knowing exactly why we associate these cozy classics with the colder months is what gives them their magic. It's like you are covered in their magic cloak, and it keeps you warm. Instead of finding out why, you accept the magic and relax with your holiday favorites.
