Miami University football head coach Chuck Martin announced at a press conference on Nov. 14 that seventh-year starting quarterback Dequan Finn is moving on from the RedHawks and won’t be playing for the rest of the 2025 season.

The announcement came two days after Miami lost to the University of Toledo Rockets on Nov. 12. The Mid-American Conference (MAC) availability report showed that Finn was out due to an illness before the game.

Redshirt senior quarterback Henry Hesson started the game against Toledo, and Martin said he will be the starter for the rest of the year.

“We had 11 good months with him,” Martin said. “Dequan did some awesome things. He’s an awesome young man. We spent a lot of time together at this point. He’s going to move on. He’s got shots to play at the next level, [and] he’s going to train and get ready to go do that. We appreciate what he did for us.”

Finn transferred to Miami after playing five seasons with Toledo and one with Baylor University. In his eight games as a RedHawk, he threw for 1,451 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 395 yards and four touchdowns.

A previous injury against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), on Sept. 20 forced Finn to miss the following game against Lindenwood University. Hesson played the rest of the UNLV game and started against Lindenwood.

Hesson has played in five games this season, amassing 489 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He served as a backup for five seasons with the RedHawks, playing in five games last year.

Hesson will make his third career start behind center in Miami’s next game against the University of Buffalo Bulls on Nov. 19.
