ASG updates bylaws and approves student organization funding

Miami University’s Associated Student Government (ASG) approved student organization funding allocations and passed one resolution at its Oct. 11 meeting.

Nearly $185,000 was allocated to over 100 student organizations.

The organization that received the most funding was League of Geeks with just under $11,000.

The funding was for League of Geeks’ annual Halloween Party event, which it hosts with 18 other student organizations.

Other organizations that received significant funding include Soul2Soul Acappella and Semper Fi Society, with almost $10,000, and Miami University Fashion and Design (MUF&D), with almost $9,000.

ASG also voted on a resolution that would increase the pay for the Speaker Pro Tempore. The current Speaker Pro Tempore is Tia Bakshi.

The Speaker Pro Tempore is currently paid Miami’s minute-taking stipend, which is about $1,000 for the academic year.

In addition to minute-taking, the responsibilities of the position include chairing ASG’s oversight committee and sitting on its elections committee.

The resolution outlined updating ASG’s bylaws to increase the pay to a salary of almost $4,000, which is the same amount cabinet members are paid.

It passed with 35 yeses, four nos and two abstentions.

ASG’s next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the Joslin Senate Chamber in Armstrong.
