Jack Owens is out as the coach of Miami basketball after he led the RedHawks to a 70-82 record over five seasons

After five seasons at the helm of Miami University basketball, Jack Owens is out as head coach of the RedHawks.

Owens and the Miami Athletic Department mutually agreed to part ways in a move that was announced Wednesday morning in an email from Miami University Athletic Communications and Marketing.

Owens signed a contract extension through the 2023-24 season last summer.

Owens led the RedHawks to a 70-82 record in his five seasons at Miami. Under Owens, the RedHawks earned a berth to the 2018 College Basketball Invitational tournament and had one winning season, going 9-8 in conference in 2020-2021.

"I want to thank Jack Owens for his tremendous effort and work ethic in leading Miami Basketball," said Miami Athletic Director David Sayler. "We all have a great amount of respect for Jack, who he is, how he conducts himself and how he ran the program. Jack's leadership throughout the pandemic was always centered on student-athlete well-being and he accomplished a lot in challenging times. We wish him well in his future endeavors."

According to ESPN college insider Jeff Berzello, former Xavier coach Travis Steele is a name to watch in the RedHawks coaching search.

For the first time in five years, Miami is in the market for a new head basketball coach. Once the athletic department hires its next coach, their first job will be convincing Miami’s current core of players to stick around.

Jessica Rivinius, Miami's Senior Director of News and Communications wrote this in an email to The Miami Student: "We are conducting a thorough search and it's currently underway; we hope to have someone named in the next few weeks."
