The Miami RedHawks women’s volleyball team bounced back last weekend in the Duke Invitational.
After starting the season 0-3, the team won two of three games in Durham, NC.
The ’Hawks opened up play Friday with a match against the College of Charleston.
Miami started off strong with a 25-19 victory in the first set, but the Charleston Cougars took the second set 25-15. The third set was a battle, but the RedHawks came out on top, 25-23.
The RedHawks came out strong in the fourth set and won, 25-18, to take the match, 3-1.
Sophomore right side Abby Stratford led the team with a career-high 18 kills, and sophomore libero Taylor Nomanson had 13 digs for the ’Hawks. Freshman setter Lydia Harper had 23 assists in her first game at Miami after missing last week’s matches due to an injury.
Later that evening, Miami fell to Duke in three sets.
The match was back and forth at the beginning of the first set, but Duke took off with an 18-10 lead and never looked back. The Blue Devils took the set, 25-15.
The ’Hawks took an early lead in the second set, but in the end, Duke won 28-26. The Devils took the third set with a 25-16 win to take the match 3-0.
Senior outside hitter Gaby Harper led the RedHawks with eight kills, while senior right side Sophie Riemersma tallied three blocks. Nomanson added 15 digs and two service aces.
On Saturday, Miami faced the Howard University Bison.
After the RedHawks won the first set, 25-19, the last three sets were a close battle. A kill by Allyson Severance tied the score at 25 in the second set, and the teams traded points until Howard scored two in a row and took the set, 29-27.

The teams were in lockstep in the third set until Riemersma got a kill and a service ace to win the set, 27-25. The Bison took a 20-16 lead in the fourth set, but the ‘Hawks came back with a kill by Riemersma to clinch the fourth set, 26-24, and the match.
The RedHawks are now 2-4 for the season. The team will play in the Miami/Best Western Invitational this weekend against Middle Tennessee, Northern Kentucky and Evansville. The first game will be Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., and the other two matches will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
