University of Dayton student dies from COVID-19 complications

A University of Dayton (UD) student died Thursday from complications relating to COVID-19, according to an email sent to the UD community.

Michael Lang, an 18-year-old freshman in UD’s College of Arts and Sciences, had a lengthy hospitalization connected to COVID-19 after returning home from the university Sept. 13 for remote learning.

“We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to his family, friends, professors and our campus community,” Dayton’s email read.

Lang’s death comes two weeks after the school reported a “growing spread” of COVID-19 on its campus.

It is unclear whether Lang contracted the virus at the university or after returning home.

At the time of publication, Miami University has reported no student deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic. Miami’s COVID-19 dashboard currently reports 289 active student cases of the virus on the university’s Oxford campus.
