Former Delt sentenced to 30 days in jail, but will serve no time

Tyler Glowaski, one of the Delta Tau Delta (Delts) fraternity brothers charged with assault and hazing, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and $250 fine.

But visiting Judge Thomas Hanna suspended Glowaski's 30-day sentence, meaning the former Delt will serve no jail time. Hanna also suspended $100 of the fine.

Eighteen former Delts members face assault and hazing charges following a hazing ritual that happened last spring, when a new member was blindfolded, spit on, kicked, forced to drink alcohol and smoke weed, and paddled on the buttocks, according to the investigation by Miami University.

On the same night, when the new members met their “big brothers,” another student was blindfolded, thrown in the trunk of a car and driven to Hueston Woods State Park, according to court documents. There, he was forced to get in the cold water and drink alcohol before returning to the fraternity house in the trunk of the car, documents say.

Eight of the Delts appeared in court on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Glowaski was the only one sentenced.

Glowaski's sentence was unrelated to the original incident report produced by Miami. His charges were based on paddling and forcing new members to drink alcohol, according to court documents.

Glowaski was originally charged with two counts of assault and five counts of hazing, but he was only sentenced on one count of hazing. The rest of the charges were dropped.

Glowaski originally pleaded not guilty but changed his plea to guilty. He will be required to complete an alcohol and drug assessment by the court. Neal Schuett, Glowaski's attorney, said the former Delt will only be placed on probation if the assessment recommends he seek counseling.

Michael Keen, another former Delt charged with assault and hazing who also appeared in court on Tuesday, had his case continued until 10 a.m. on Jan. 21.

The other six — Connor Meek, Alex Niezyniecki, Nicholas Griswold, Jason Londa, Nicholas Carmichael and Benjamin Grossheim — will have their next hearing at 10 a.m. on Feb. 25 at the Oxford Courthouse.

The 10 remaining Delt brothers will appear in court at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 at the Oxford Courthouse.
