MAC begins conference slate this Saturday

For the first few weeks, most Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams have faced a tough schedule loaded with Power Five teams. After battling it out in non-conference contests, conference play returns with a full slate of MAC games, including Miami’s conference home opener against Central Michigan.

Miami Hockey set for exciting season

Chris Bergeron enters his third year at the helm of the Miami RedHawks still looking for his first winning season. It hasn’t been an easy task for Bergeron, taking over a team that finished seventh or lower (of eight) in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) in the the three seasons preceding his hire. The RedHawks hit the ice for the first time on October 2 against Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan. After another weekend series at Michigan State, Miami finally returns to Cady Arena for its home opener against cross-state rival Bowling Green on October 22.

From VHS tapes to YouTube highlight reels: How social media has changed recruiting

Miami wide receivers coach Israel Woolfork played college football from 2008 to 2012 at Division II Grand Valley State in Michigan, where Chuck Martin was the head coach before moving on to Notre Dame as an assistant. Before YouTube was around, he remembers mailing out DVDs and VHS tapes of his highlights when he was in high school.  “Now, to see where it is, where a kid can literally inbox me with his link to his highlights, his transcripts, and everything being on the phone and accessible in a matter of 30 seconds? It’s wild.”

Could Sam Bachman be the most recent first round pick to jump straight to the MLB?

On Sunday night, pitcher Sam Bachman will likely be the first ever Miami RedHawk to be taken in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft. One of Bachman’s most exciting traits is his apparent MLB readiness. Draft insider Joe Doyle speculated that he could end up in an MLB bullpen later in 2021, saying “If there’s stuff that’ll play immediately out of a big league bullpen, it’s Bachman’s.” Major League teams always need bullpen help. Who better to provide it than a young player with strikeout stuff?

Student baseball managers program excellent in more ways than one

The managers, led for the most part by juniors Zorian Schiffman, Rory Tekulve and Kotila, is a group of student volunteers that help with nearly every aspect of the baseball team’s operation.  Schiffman believes Miami has the largest program of student managers in the country. “[We work on] things from game planning and video scouting, to player development, to some of the more in depth research projects,” Schiffman said.
