Meet the Columnist: Charley Babb

(04/17/26 10:00am)

I joined The Miami Student in my first semester of sophomore year, mostly because I wanted to see what it was like, and I quickly found myself gravitating towards the Opinion section. I’ve never had much experience in journalism or opinion writing, and this seemed to be a good way to try it out. I’ve been a writer for years, but this was a new format and a new experience for me.

Burger King’s new AI headsets are dystopian

(04/14/26 10:00am)

The restaurant chain Burger King announced in February that it is launching a new artificial intelligence (AI) powered chatbot integrated into an online management system, designed to track employee friendliness. It has named the chatbot, powered by OpenAI, “Patty.” A spokesperson for Burger King said it is being trialed in 500 restaurants nationwide, and all of the franchise’s U.S. restaurants should have access to the chatbot by the end of this year.

Flock Safety cameras are immoral and insulting

(04/07/26 10:00am)

Over the last few years, you may have noticed some new pieces of infrastructure on the side of the road. They’re tall black poles with a small solar panel mounted on top and a little camera box slung off the side. They’re not particularly noticeable, intentionally designed to blend in with the rest of the street furniture that adorns the side of American roads.

The upcoming Oxford Amtrak station is good, but we can do better

(11/17/25 11:00am)

Construction for an Amtrak train station in Oxford is expected to begin in 2026. The stop, located as part of the larger Chestnut Field Multimodal Station, is slated to be operational sometime later that year. It will be serviced by the Cardinal Line, which runs from New York to Chicago, stopping in a number of major cities along its path (including Cincinnati and Washington, D.C.). Concrete details about it are difficult to find, but one thing is clear: This stop has been a long time coming, and it’s nearly here. I’m excited for it.
