When I was in elementary school, I began writing for the first time on my white Microsoft laptop. I would sit criss-cross-applesauce on my couch and rapidly type fictional stories about the life I wish I had. I had an expansive imagination and a strong inclination to daydream instead of living in reality.

This contributed to a lot of awful, half-finished stories collecting dust on my computer. However, this began my love for writing.

Writing became an integral part of my life. I excelled in English class. I was on a competitive writing team in middle school, even though I never achieved more than a participation award. I helped found my high school newspaper, single handedly editing and designing every publication. To be honest though, nobody read it.

I never understood people’s disinterest in reading. How else would you learn?

Beyond this ignorant mindset, I truly just wanted people to care. I thought about all the works of writing in the world; the love, passion and work poured into every word. This was someone’s career, someone’s entire life.

Every writer has their moments of doubt. It’s easy to criticize what you write, downplay your talents and convince yourself to give it all up. I am lucky, though. Every time I lose confidence, someone has been there to pick me up, whether it’s teachers, mentors, friends or fellow writers.

These people are why I write. Even a stranger in the street gives me reason to write. No matter how small, I know words on a page will impact somebody, somewhere.

I joined The Miami Student because I wanted to continue writing and make people care. Writing can inspire mindsets and evoke change. If I can make even the smallest contribution, I’ll be satisfied.
