Associated Student Government (ASG) discussed a proposal Tuesday to reduce or eliminate residence hall laundry costs and approved a resolution to expand volunteer opportunities during National Volunteer Week.
Senator Nick McClure proposed reducing the cost of residence hall laundry services from $3.50 to around $3 per load, or eliminating the fee entirely. Students may spend roughly $100 to $200 each year on laundry at the current rate — money McClure said could go toward books, food and other necessities.
“I looked at the university budget, and residence halls do bring in more money than [laundry services] cost to operate, so I’m not necessarily sure why they cost that much,” McClure said.
McClure noted many universities across the country — including the University of Dayton and Ohio State University — include laundry services within room and board fees rather than charging per load, while others keep costs closer to $3. At the very least, McClure said the cost at Miami should be reduced to $3.
When asked if he had spoken with the administrators responsible for laundry services, McClure said he had not, but planned to raise the issue with them.
ASG passed the resolution.

In other business, Senator Lynn Setter proposed establishing more volunteer opportunities during National Volunteer Week and Earth Week, which both occur April 19–25.
“[Miami University] did one thing for National Volunteer Week, like three years ago, and haven’t done anything since,” Setter said.
Setter proposed collaborating with ASG’s internal sustainability initiatives to incentivize battery recycling, filling the “Salt You Betty” bags — salt kits for icy sidewalks — and other service projects. She said she has met with the Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service, which agreed to collaborate on ideas, resources and events.
National Volunteer Week occurs the week before the Greek Service Fest, and Setter said she hopes these initiatives will gain traction within Greek organizations and provide students with opportunities to earn service hours.
Secretary Tyreke Farquharson added that National Volunteer Week is often overlooked and treated as a one-time event rather than an ongoing effort.
The resolution passed.
ASG also approved a bill placing the Student Body Vice President, Kiersten Osteboe, in charge of coordinating the university’s Outstanding Professor Awards following the dissolution of the Academic Affairs Secretariat.
Members also addressed several student concerns during the meeting.
Secretary Katherine Allison said Pepsi plans to inspect dining hall soda machines in response to several reports that drinks and ice were not dispensing during peak hours.
A student also raised concerns about electric vehicle chargers in the North parking lot, saying they were obsolete and needed replacement. Secretary Jeansonne said replacing the chargers may take time due to the university’s sustainability commitments. In the meantime, he suggested alternative charging locations, including Millet Hall, Ditmer Hall, Chestnut Hall and the Marcum Conference Center.
ASG will meet again at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 in the Joslin Senate Chambers.
