Dan Darkow was named the director of the Miller Center for Student Disability Services in April 2024.

Dan Darkow, 32, the director of the Miller Center for Student Disability Services (SDS), died February 11, according to a statement from Miami University.

Darkow was best known for his work with SDS, where he oversaw accommodations for disabled students on campus for 11 years. During that time, Darkow was also an adjunct professor in the educational psychology disability studies program and a Miami alumnus.

Darkow was beloved by faculty and students alike, and his colleagues expressed their admiration for his kindness and selflessness.

“There truly are not enough words in any language to capture the depth of Dan’s impact on the Miami community, the broader disabled community, or me personally,” said Annastashia Blesi, assistant director for the Miller Center.

Blesi described Darkow as an empathetic and caring leader, who let all of his employees be themselves unapologetically, and supported them whenever they needed it.

Hope Sweeney, an access coordinator at the Miller Center, also spoke about Darkow’s kindness and willingness to help others.

“He led with patience, generosity and real care for students and colleagues alike … He made our office a community,” Sweeney said. “We will miss his weekend recaps, binge-watching recommendations and the latest Taylor Swift news.”

Sweeney’s colleague, Jacqlyn Schott, a fellow access coordinator, said Darkow was “the  embodiment of the Miami Spirit.”

Outside of the Miller Center, Darkow will be remembered for touching the lives of many across Miami. Jayne Brownell, the vice president of Student Life, remembers Darkow for his selflessness.

“Dan was all in on his work,” she said, “all in on Miami, and all in on you.”

In its email statement to students, the Miller Center wrote that more information about a memorial and plans to honor his legacy will be released shortly.

“Dan was the best of us,” BaShaun Smith, the dean of students, said. “Miami is a better, more accessible place because of his advocacy.”

Brownell added that Darkow was a person who squeezed every bit out of life he could, and he will be missed by Miami students and faculty.
