Associated Student Government (ASG) welcomed seven new senators during its first meeting of the spring semester on Tuesday evening.
Nathan French, associate professor of religion and international studies, vice chair of senate and chair of the senate executive committee, spoke to ASG about the new Enabling Act passed in the wake of Senate Bill 1.
“First, it is Miami [University]'s institutional understanding that Ohio law requires the advisory role of the University Senate,” French said, “and this language is an attempt to capture that necessity.”
French also discussed proposed changes to the curriculum approval process in light of the university senate’s discussion about changes to the Miami Plan core curriculum. As it currently functions, the curriculum approval process takes between one and two years because of the number of governing bodies that must approve it, as well as the amount of time each governing body takes.
ASG also passed its internal operating budget (IOB) for the semester. The IOB contained funding for personal safety alarms, which ASG has distributed in the past, as well as Amazon gift cards. Students can enter a raffle to win the gift cards if they complete a survey about their knowledge of Miami’s Good Neighbor Policy.
A student submitted a concern to ASG about the bathrooms in Armstrong Student Center, that they had been unusually dirty recently. Vice President Kirsten Osteboe said the Armstrong Student Center board is aware of the issue, but isn’t able to address it beyond cleaning up the messes as they occur. If students are concerned about unclean bathrooms, they should report the issue to physical facilities.

Senator Quin Ahler discussed issues with the Clawson Hall workout facility on Western campus. Ahler said the gym was dusty and dirty, making it easy for students to slip on the floors.
“I remember [the] first week of my [first] year, it rained like crazy, and water leaked out of the ceiling,” Ahler said. “Now the entire floor is covered in like severe mold all over the floor, and it's never been rectified.”
The Safety and Transportation Committee committed the concern.
ASG will meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. in the Joslin Senate Chambers.
