Associated Student Government (ASG) discussed multiple safety and transportation concerns, including a non-functional crosswalk light and the dangers of e-scooters on campus.
A student submitted a concern after a student riding an e-scooter almost collided with them. The student requested ASG create a policy to ban e-scooters. President Danny Martin said in the past, ASG has created initiatives involving charging stations, but has never been directly involved with the policy before.
Senator Max Tumbleson said the Safety and Transportation Committee is already working with Miami University Police Captain Andy Rosenberger, director of Parking and Transportation Services, on the issue. Tumbleson also said Parking Services doesn’t have a real way to enforce rules about e-scooters, but that they plan to increase signage on campus to spread awareness.
Senator Nicholas Rentschler said he was concerned that banning e-scooters may cause students to turn to equally dangerous alternatives, like electric bikes or skateboards. He also said a possible solution could be to install speedbumps around campus to discourage speeding.
Senator Kali Barcroft said because Miami Athletics purchases e-scooters for some of its athletes, creating a policy regarding their use may be challenging.
E-scooters are only allowed in campus bike lanes due to their high speeds, according to the Miami policy library.

Senator Zeplynn Whitmore brought forward a concern about a crosswalk on Trenton Oxford Road, near Bachelor Hall, not lighting up when the button was pressed. The Safety and Transportation Committee is investigating the issue.
Vice President Kiersten Osteboe spoke about the Outstanding Professor Awards (OPAs), which recognize professors who have gone above and beyond for their students, both in and out of the classroom. The OPAs are awarded annually by ASG, and the winner and runners-up are determined by student submissions.
“This is just a continued tradition of recognizing faculty excellence and student success, at a time where it kind of can go under the radar,” Osteboe said. “It's just a great opportunity to bring students and faculty together and highlight all the great things happening at Miami.”
The nomination form will open March 1 and close April 1. The ceremony will be held April 27.
ASG will meet again on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in the Joslin Senate Chambers.
