The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team (2-1) welcomes the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers (2-2) to Millett Hall on Nov. 13  looking to recuperate from its recent road loss.

The RedHawks took their first defeat of the season against the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies 80-75 on Nov. 10. They nearly completed a comeback, shortening an 18-point difference to five in the fourth quarter, but fell short when the clock ran out.

Sophomore guard Tamar Singer scored 18 points while bringing in five assists and six steals. Redshirt junior forward Brooke Blumenfeld and senior guard Amber Scalia followed with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Despite going up 8-2 a little under halfway in the first quarter, Miami faltered in the final five minutes and let Oakland take a 22-13 lead before the second. The Golden Grizzlies added to their advantage, keeping the RedHawks scoreless in the final two minutes and going up 41-25 at halftime.

Both teams added 23 points in the third quarter, with Miami going on a 9-2 scoring run in the first three minutes. The RedHawks entered the final 10 minutes of play down 64-48, but a 7-2 run in the final two minutes brought the gap to 80-75. However, the RedHawks were unable to complete the comeback before the buzzer.

The two teams shot nearly identical from the field, but Oakland shot 9-31 (29%) on 3-pointers compared to Miami’s 4-18 (22.2%). Redshirt senior center Lianna Baxter, junior guard Layla Gold and redshirt sophomore guard Cali Denson split the Golden Grizzlies’ 3-pointers equally with three each.

Four Oakland players scored in the double digits. Gold led the roster with 21 points and notched a double-double with 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Angie Smith added 16 points and sank four free throws on five attempts.

The RedHawks will meet the Grenadiers for the first time in program history.

Indiana Southeast shot to a 2-0 start this season before dropping its last two games. The Grenadiers lost to two opponents in the top three of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The Grenadiers’ last two losses came at the Campbellsville Classic against Campbellsville University and Bethel University. Senior guard Jesse Ledgerwood, who averages 21.8 points so far this season, scored a combined 33 points in those two games, including 22 against Bethel.

Junior forward Linzie Wernert and junior guard Grace Stapleton average 14.3 and 12.3 points, respectively. The two scored 34 points together against Bethel, while sophomore forward Ella Brown had a productive game against Campbellsville with 11 points.

Last season, the RedHawks went 2-1 in its first three games before going 5-2 to finish out non-conference play. Their 7-3 status going into MAC play was their best start to a season since 2018-19, when the RedHawks started 9-2 enroute to a 23-9 finish.
