Tricks, treats and TV: Disney’s top 10 Halloween episodes

The best way to get in the spooky spirit is by watching nostalgic Halloween specials. The most iconic run of Halloween specials during my childhood was Disney Channel’s “Monstober.” If you miss having a section of TV specifically for this holiday, then this list of top 10 Disney Halloween episodes might be for you.

10. ‘Kang-A-Rooney’ — ‘Liv and Maddie’

This episode of “Liv and Maddie” blends awkward humor in a classic Halloween school party setting. Joey, Liv and Maddie’s brother, is nervous about talking to Skyler and, in an attempt to help him gain confidence, Maddie gets him to practice by talking to other girls first. It is a lighthearted episode perfect for a funny evening of TV.

9.  ‘Blogtoberfest’ — ‘Dog with a Blog’

Following No. 10 is another light-hearted episode. The siblings, Tyler and Avery, enter a contest for the best Halloween blog post. Of course, chaos ensues due to sibling rivalry and Stan the talking dog has hilarious commentary, as usual.

8. ‘Halloween’ — ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’

The Russo family is worried about their haunted house staying open because in previous years they have focused on safety over scary. Due to a threat of closure, they hire real ghosts to scare guests and stay open.

7. ‘Fright Knight’ — ‘Good Luck Charlie’

The episode starts with Teddy and her friends going Halloween caroling to raise money for the school drama club. One of Teddy’s friends alludes to his pattern of Halloween disasters. The Duncans’ mom attempts to showcase her s0-called master pumpkin skills on TV. The story takes a turn when Amy reveals the carved pumpkins and when PJ and Gabe are confronted by a strange neighbor. 

6. ‘MutANT Farm’ — ‘A.N.T. Farm’

In this episode, Webster High School holds a ‘MutANT’ program where monsters go to school with normal high school students. If you have never watched ‘A.N.T. Farm,’ A.N.T. refers to the kids in the Advanced Natural Talents program. The mutants get to tell the humans what to do when setting up for the Halloween dance. Along with the messy power dynamic, human-mutant relationships are forbidden, so when two start to fall for each other, things get messy.

In the season two premiere, Austin is set to perform with Taylor Swift during a Halloween party. Dez and Trish, Austin’s friends, pull a prank which leads to Swift being knocked out. In the end, the show’s songwriter, Ally, steps in to save Austin’s Halloween performance.

4. ‘Druselsteinoween’ — ‘Phineas and Ferb’

Doofenshmirtz inherits a castle, and in the will his great aunt leaves a note saying there’s a large treasure hidden inside the castle. Vanessa throws a Halloween party in the new castle with Phineas and Ferb in the role of the party’s DJs and planners.

3. ‘The Whining’ —  ‘Jessie’

This episode is teeming with allusions to the original “The Shining,” automatically making it a great episode. The premise of the episode follows Emma, Luke, Ravi and Zuri fearing a legend of a nanny doing something horrible to the kids she took care of on Halloween.

2. ‘Summerween’ — ‘Gravity Falls’

In the show, “Gravity Falls” takes place over the course of the summer, but Halloween sneaks its way in. The town loves Halloween so much that the residents celebrate twice a year in an iconic holiday called Summerween. 

Dipper battles feeling obligated to skip trick-or-treating because of his age to go to a party with Wendy. In a moment of frustration, Dipper insults a mysterious figure at his doorstep and is tasked with collecting 500 pieces of candy to save a friend from the figure.

1. ‘The Ghost of Suite 613’ — ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’

Finally, No. 1 is a  well-rounded and classic Halloween episode. Set in a haunted hotel, this episode that is still referenced today, complete with both comedic and eerie moments. 

These 10 Disney Halloween episodes have continued to captivate fans with nostalgia and  blend humor and heartwarming moments. Whether you are revisiting old childhood shows or are watching them for the first time, these episodes are a timeless way to enjoy Halloween.
