Caroline Scott Harrison Day to be celebrated on Oct. 29

Major William Snavely announced that Oct. 29 will be Caroline Scott Harrison Day, urging citizens to celebrate her work in promoting the arts and education for women. Harrison served as the first lady to Benjamin Harrison, where she dedicated her time to charity and advocacy for the education of women.

The holiday coincides with the anniversary of the OCAC’s opening. The OCAC is located in the Oxford Female Institute Building.

“The [OCAC] continues a legacy of creativity, education and community in the very place Harrison was born,” Snavely said.

Heidi Schiller, executive director for the OCAC, presented the center’s 2024-2025 report.

The OCAC provides local artists with a space to display their artwork, hosts performances and offers classes. Schiller announced the OCAC is preparing for renovations, adding additional classrooms, artist studios and air conditioning and heat.

“[The OCAC] is proud to serve Oxford as we honor our historic roots, strive to meet today’s needs and imagine a future that opens doors to all,” Schiller said.

City to apply for grant for the construction of a new skatepark

Jessica Greene, assistant city manager, presented a resolution to apply for a $180,000 grant from Butler County. The funds would be used to construct a new concrete skatepark.

The Oxford Skate Park closed on Sep. 30 due to safety concerns and was met with community backlash. The city plans to construct a high-quality park as soon as possible to address the needs of the community.

The use of these funds to construct a skate park will require the deferral of other projects, such as shade-providing infrastructure at the Northside Bark Dog Park and the installation of a new playground

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” councilor David Prytherch said. “There are tradeoffs. In listening to the public and doing this, other things can’t be done.”

Council will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 4,  at 7:30 p.m. at the Oxford Courthouse.
