Miami University is working on revisions to the Miami Plan. Marko Dumančić and Elizabeth Wardle appeared as representatives from the University Senate to give a presentation on restructuring the Miami Plan, the set of core requirements all students must complete to graduate, at the Sept. 23 Associated Student Government (ASG) meeting. This restructuring involves understanding student sentiments toward the Miami Plan and collaborating with students to address issues or shortcomings.

After the presentation, several senators talked about their own experiences with the Miami Plan and what things they felt were most important to fix.

Senator Nicholas Barry specifically cited the English 111 course as an example of a Miami Plan course that might benefit from changes. He said that although it is a core class that many students take, he didn’t feel it was particularly useful.

“I just feel like there’s a lot of runway in that class to potentially improve the effectiveness of what’s being taught compared to where it currently is,” Barry said.

Tyreke Farquharson, secretary of sustainability, said he thinks part of the problem is that students aren’t given a good explanation about why a liberal arts education is good or relevant to them.

“I think there’s a lack of understanding among students as to what that really means,” Farquharson said. “I had a very good experience with the Miami Plan, but I also did a lot of digging to find classes that I would find interesting.”

ASG then moved on to address student concerns. Vice President Kirsten Osteboe committed a concern about overgrown tree branches on paths leading to campus and overgrown flower baskets in Uptown obscuring road signs.

Senators Quinten Ahler, Duke Buckalew and Leah Disantis were appointed to the Judicial Council.

Barry presented a bill to change the name Financial Services Committee to Funding Committee. He said this change would make more sense for student organizations since the committee allocates funds to student clubs. Additionally, the email used by the committee is “asgfunding@miamioh.edu,” so the name change would bring the committee more in line with the contact information.

“The number one complaint about ASG last year was the clarity of funding,” Ahler said. “I think renaming these to have some more consistency is a great idea.”

ASG will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m. in the Joslin Senate Chambers.
