The transition to college can be difficult, especially for first-year students. For many, it marks their first time living independently, far from hometowns and families.
Students experience this adjustment in different ways. Some love their newfound freedom, while others find themselves missing the comfort of home. Homesickness is common, but there are ways to make the transition easier.
Make plans with new friends
While it can be intimidating to branch out and make new friends, a majority of new students are in the same position. Many are experiencing their first time away from home and want to meet new people. Don’t hesitate to talk to someone new, and after reaching out, stay in touch and make plans together.
Go to school events
Miami University hosts many events on campus, often involving free food and opportunities to meet fellow students. These gatherings provide a chance for students to connect and learn more about different groups and activities available at Miami. Many events are free and open to all students, making them a great way to get out of your dorm and combat homesickness.
Explore Oxford
Oxford is also home to numerous events, restaurants and shops worth checking out. While Uptown may be a bit of a walk from some on-campus dorms, taking the time to explore the town can help students feel more connected to the community they will be living in for several years.
Stay in touch with family and friends from home
Thanks to FaceTime, calling, texting, and staying connected with friends and family is easier than ever. When feeling homesick, reaching out to a loved one, such as a best friend or parent, can provide a sense of comfort. It can help students still feel connected to home, even when miles away.
Get involved
One of the best ways to get involved and meet people at Miami is to join an on-campus organization. With clubs ranging from major-related organizations to Taylor Swift fandoms, there’s something for everyone. Getting involved helps students get out there and try new things. The Hub, Miami’s online catalog for all organizations, is a great way to check out all of the organizations and clubs Miami has to offer.
