ASG takes next step in helping to bring a second franchise restaurant to campus

Miami University’s Associated Student Government (ASG) voted on a resolution presenting student restaurant preferences at its Sept. 27 meeting.

Aramark plans to bring a second franchise restaurant to campus. Panera Bread is currently in the process of being installed in Armstrong Student Center and is set to open during the fall 2023 semester. This second restaurant is aimed to also open in fall 2023, but its location on campus hasn’t been determined.

The student body had the opportunity to help choose what franchise will come to campus through polls conducted by ASG’s On-Campus Affairs Committee.

The first poll had students write in their favorite franchises.

The second poll was conducted in a multiple-choice format with six franchises that had the highest responses: Chipotle, BIBIBOP Asian Grill, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Noodles and Company, Culver’s and Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers.

Chick-fil-A was also one of the most requested restaurants but was excluded from consideration in the second poll for ethical reasons. Chick-fil-A has a history of donating to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations and politicians, which is why the committee chose to exclude it.

The resolution outlines the results from the second poll and shows senator support for what the student body voted on. The top three franchises are Raising Cane’s, BIBIBOP and Culver’s, which the committee will recommend to Aramark.

Senators also voted to approve funding for the fall cycle of ASG’s internal operating budget (IOB).

Around $6,500 in funding was allocated to members of cabinet for various expenses, mostly including marketing materials.

ASG’s next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in the Joslin Senate Chamber in Armstrong.
