Miami COVID-19 active cases decline

Sept. 15

Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard lists an estimated 689 active cases Tuesday in Oxford, a 351-case decline from Sept. 9.

Estimated recovered cases total 599, and cumulative student cases total 1,288.

Of the 1,038 residence hall tests administered, nine total were positive.

A bar graph illustrating daily new cases, daily recovered, 7-day moving average daily new cases and 7-day moving average daily recovered cases is now available on the dashboard.

Residence hall move-in began this week, and in-person classes will resume Sept. 21.

Sept. 9

Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard lists 33 new student cases of the coronavirus in Oxford Wednesday. No employees tested positive since Tuesday's update.

The cumulative totals now add up to 1,117 students and five employees since the beginning of classes on Aug. 17. In the last 14 days — the length of a recommended quarantine — 1,040 students have tested positive.

Wednesday morning, the university announced it will proceed with its re-opening plan, moving students into residence halls next week and starting in-person classes Sept. 21.

Sept. 8

As of Tuesday, changes have been made to Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard to reflect a distinction between active and cumulative cases.

Since Friday’s update, 159 more Oxford campus students and three more employees have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the number of active student cases to 1,037.

The dashboard reports a cumulative number of student cases at 1,084, meaning that 47 students have recovered since the dashboard began reporting cases.

This latest update to the dashboard comes just one day before the university is expected to announce its decision regarding the return of on-campus students beginning next week.

Sept. 4

As of Friday, 92 more students tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of Oxford student cases to 925, according to Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard. The number of employee cases remains at three.

This update comes a day after Provost Jason Osborne told University Senate that a decision “has not been made yet” in regard to a return to in-person classes. A decision is expected from the university no later than next Wednesday, Sept. 9.

In a university-wide email, President Greg Crawford urged students to refrain from traveling and attending large gatherings during the long weekend.

Sept. 3

As of Thursday, 129 more students and one more employee have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of student cases to 833 and employee cases to 3, according to Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard.

“No decision has been made,” said Provost Jason Osbourne in today's University Senate meeting in regard to the return to campus.

Miami is still scheduled to begin in-person classes on Sept 21. with residence hall move-in beginning Sept. 14. If there are any changes, the decision will be announced no later than Wednesday, Sept. 9, according to President Crawford's most recent email to the Miami community.

Sept. 2

As of Wednesday, 132 more students tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of Oxford student cases to 704, according to Miami University’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The total number of employee positive tests remains at two. According to the dashboard, no faculty or staff members have tested positive since Aug. 21.

This increase in cases comes after the university implemented its new wide-net and surveillance testing strategy, where 3,000 students can be tested each week.

Miami is still scheduled to begin in person classes Sept 21. with residence hall move-in beginning Sept. 14.

Sept. 1

As of Tuesday, 249 more students have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to Miami University's COVID-19 dashboard. This brings the total number of student cases to 527.

207 of the new cases were self-reported or from the Butler County General Health District. The other 49 cases were reported from Miami’s Student Health Services.

This near doubling of cases comes after an email from President Greg Crawford to the Miami community yesterday, pleading with students to comply with CDC guidelines.

“This is a very critical week,” Crawford wrote. “It is vital for us in Oxford to achieve a downward trend in positive cases in our off-campus community before our planned in-person start.”

Miami is still scheduled to begin in person classes Sept 21. with residence hall move-in beginning Sept. 14.

Aug. 31

As of Friday, 278 students have tested positive for coronavirus, according to Miami University's COVID-19 dashboard. This 153-student increase comes just days before the university is scheduled to decide the fate of in-person classes for the rest of the fall semester.

Last Friday, Miami’s Division of Student Life announced its coronavirus testing strategy in a university-wide email. In the email, the university said that it is in partnership with TriHealth and has the capability to test 3,000 students per week.

Students will be invited via email to be tested for the coronavirus at the Student Health Center. They will then have 48 hours to schedule an appointment to be tested.

If students repeatedly do not schedule their test, they will not be permitted to participate in in-person classes, access campus services or enter their residence halls.

Aug. 26

Miami University's COVID-19 dashboard is now reporting 125 cases of the coronavirus among students and three among employees as of Wednesday. This represents an 86-student increase since The Miami Student last reported on 27 student-athletes contracting the virus Monday evening.

According to a press release from the Butler County General Health District (BCGHD), at least 100 tests are still pending.

This influx of reported cases and pending tests does not include those who received tests at labs in other cities, states or private laboratories. This indicates the total number of cases among Miami community members in Oxford could be higher than 128.

“The increase in cases is a reminder of how contagious and easily spread this virus is,” said Jennifer Bailer, BCGHD health commissioner. “You can be asymptomatic and still spread the infection to others.”

Bailer said the majority of new cases are among student-athletes and those they came in contact with.

On Wednesday, 37 of the new student cases were reported via TriHealth and Student Health Services, and 49 were self-reported. The one new employee case was reported via TriHealth and Employee Health Center, according to the dashboard.

After the first cases of the semester last week, Dean of Students Kimberly Moore warned students to take precautions against the coronavirus.

“We need students to take this seriously,” Moore said. “There are lots of indications that some students — more than we would like — are not taking this seriously, and that is a real threat to our community and our ability to continue to operate as planned.”

Miami is scheduled to begin a return to in-person classes Sept. 21.
