Class at the court recap

By Coburn Gillies, For The Miami Student

The Miami University women's basketball team, in its season opening game, fell to the Northern Kentucky Norsemen 71-57.

The RedHawks never had a tie or a lead throughout the duration of the fixture at Millett Hall.

Northern Kentucky was lights out beyond the arc, shooting 50 percent (4 for 8) in he first half and 60 percent (3 for 5) in the second.

While the 'Hawks suffered a 14 point loss, there were some signs during the game head coach Cleve Wright's group is destined for improvement.

"I think the main thing that sticks out to me is when we came out of halftime. We got some stops and cut down the lead to about 6 points," said Baleigh Reid at the postgame press conference.

Reid led Miami in scoring with a 17-point performance. Rounding out the top-5 in scoring on the day for the RedHawks was Leah Purvis with 15, Ana Richter - who is looking to possibly transition from guard to forward - with 8, Megan Galloway with 6 points and Kendall McCoy with 5 points.

For Reid, who was named to the All-MAC freshmen team last season, it was another typical day in the office. This type of performance, especially against an opponent like Northern Kentucky, should only foster optimism for the hopes of a breakout campaign in 2015-16.

For the 'Hawks, it was the woeful 8-point second quarter that would have appeared to have done the team in. Digging out of a hole at halftime is never easy, not to mention a double-digit deficit.

While the RedHawks came out fighting in the second half, with a layup by Baleigh Reid and a 3-pointer from Purvis, cutting the deficit to 6, that was the closest they would come.

Miami takes the court once again 7 p.m. Monday, playing host to Evansville at Millett Hall. The game will air live on ESPN3.
